Since 2011-2012 Derry Village has adopted a model of team teaching or collaborative teaching model called Subject Specialization in Grades 4 and 5.
The Subject Specialization model at Derry Village School means that pairs of teachers in the same grade share the responsibility for teaching the same students. Classes pair up and one teacher instructs in math/science and the other instructs in language arts/social studies. Students change classrooms midway through the school day.
We believe this model to be an effective one for our students as it enables elementary teachers to reach more students by focusing on their strengths and teaching those subjects to two classes of students, rather than just one. Teachers also save time needed for expanded student reach by narrowing their subject coverage. Teachers collaborate as a team to ensure student learning and development.
